Olive Ash Burl is sought after by woodworkers for having mesmerizing patterns not found in any other type of burl. The tangled threads of dark color seem to float above and through a neutral background layer. Olive Ash Burl has a cream or light brown background with medium brown, gray, or green vein lines. It is a moderately hard wood with a coarse texture that readily accepts stains and finishes. Olive Ash is not a particular species of Ash. It is simply a reference to the color variation and streaks found the heartwood typically found in European Ash trees. This coloring resembles that of true Olive trees. Paper-backed veneer is a real wood veneer permanently bonded to a paper backing. This backing is applied to keep intact the individual wood veneers used to make up the full width of the sheet. A four foot wide paper-backed veneer consists of multiple veneers glued together side by side. The backing also minimizes seasonal expansion and contraction of the wood caused by changes in ambient humidity.
