Spalted Hackberry (Celtis occidentalis) heartwood is light brown to gray with contrasting light yellow sapwood and streaks of blue-gray fungal staining. Grain is usually straight with occasional interlocking structure. Machines good with both hand and machine tools. Spalted is not technically a species of Hackberry. It is Hackberry that has been allowed to begin the initial stages of decay, but then dried to prevent further decay. This partial decay, known as spalting, gives the wood its unique characteristic dark lines and streaks where fungus has begun to attack.
